Car crashes into Altamonte Springs home after driver mistakes bike trail for road

Bart Baufman was lounging in his recliner at 2 a.m. on Saturday when a car suddenly crashed into his Altamonte Springs home, folding the couch he was on like an accordion.Baufman said his initial reaction was "what the hell."His wife, Rebecca, rushed in to find the car inside their house, but she couldn't locate Bart at first."I said, 'Bart, are you OK?' He said, 'I'm OK,' but I didn't know where it was coming from," she said."The headlights were here, I mean the whole car was in here," Rebecca added."I just couldn't believe it. The car was still on. How in the world did this happen?" she said. The driver apparently mistook a bicycle trail for a road. West Central Parkway runs behind the mall and dead ends at one point. The driver, who was on Central Parkway, was supposed to turn left or right, but instead drove through the trail, breaking two fences, threading between bushes and a pine tree, and slamming into the house.Fortunately, Bart and the two people in the car were not seriously hurt, but the house suffered significant damage, including smashed windows and bent metal. The trail remains open to walkers, runners, and those traveling on vehicles with two wheels. It is not clear why the driver of the sedan kept going straight. The Altamonte Springs Police Department is investigating the crash.
