Car chase on Route 24 ends in crash, arrest, police say

A suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday after leading troopers on a high-speed chase on Route 24 south in the Bridgewater, Massachusetts, area.According to a Massachusetts State Police spokesperson, troopers issued a "be on the lookout" around 5 p.m. for a white Mercedes that had been driving erratically in the area.A short time later, a trooper stopped the Mercedes on Route 24 south near Mile Marker 20.According to police, the driver sped away from the stop, utilizing the breakdown lane.Because of the heavy traffic conditions in the roadway, the trooper did not pursue the suspect for safety reasons.Police said the Mercedes continued traveling southbound and ended up crashing into two other vehicles on Route 24 at Route 44 in Raynham.Sky5 flew over the scene where traffic was backed up for miles.The driver of the Mercedes tried fleeing into the woods after the crash, but was eventually caught by responding troopers, according to state police.The suspect and another person were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The severity of their injuries is unknown at this time.State police did not release the name of the suspect or what charges they may be facing.The left travel lane was closed for a short time while vehicles were towed from the scene.The crash remains under investigation.
