Bus carrying Maryland School for the Blind students crashes into Parkville building

Three people were hospitalized after a school bus crashed into a building in Parkville on Tuesday afternoon, according to Baltimore County officials. The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. on July 21 at the intersection of Harford Road and Lavender Avenue. The bus was carrying students from the Maryland School for the Blind. According to Baltimore County Fire Bureau Chief Travis Francis, three students and two adults were on the school bus at the time of the crash. All were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. Two other children and eight individuals were evaluated at the scene and declined further medical treatment. "My wall goes up against where the bus hit. So I was working at my table, heard the whole building. Building shook, heard the boom. I was like "earthquake?" I'm freaking out, I have a one-and-a-half-year-old with me. So I grab him, I heard the second boom and I was like, accident, ran out the door. I knew immediately what it was because this is probably the 20th accident in front of the store," Carrie Shelley, owner of Enchanted Cakes and Treats, said. The bus also struck other vehicles before crashing into the building. Fire officials said at least three vehicles, including the school bus, were involved, though they cautioned that number could change as crews continue working at the active scene. "All I remember we were pretty stationary and then I just felt like hit, hit, hit," Ava Edwards, whose car was struck by the bus, said. "I don't know how many times. I definitely jolted a few times and I like I get out like, "what did I just hit?" And I see that and then I just thought they hit me then I see so many people over there and I was like "oh there's a bus in a building," so I don't know what happened." A Baltimore County structural engineer will inspect the building after the bus is removed to determine whether it is safe or if it should be condemned. "We know mobile devices distract us, loud music or just not paying attention to what's going on in the road in front of you," Francis said. "As well as walking safely, using crosswalks, things like that. Just be safe, Baltimore County. Statement from the Maryland School for the Blind: This afternoon, a bus transporting students from The Maryland School for the Blind was involved in a traffic accident in the 7800 block of Harford Road in Parkville. According to the Baltimore County Fire Department, the bus driver and one child from the bus, in addition to one other adult on location, were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. Two other children and eight individuals were evaluated at the scene and declined further medical treatment. MSB administrators responded immediately to the scene. We are grateful to the Baltimore County Fire Department, EMS, law enforcement, and hospital personnel for their prompt response and care. The cause of the accident remains under investigation. We will not provide additional details while that investigation is ongoing. All lanes southbound and northbound were reopened along Harford Road at Taylor Avenue around 10:22 p.m., according to police.
