British citizens in Machu Picchu train accident, per Foreign Office

The Foreign Office has reported that British citizens were involved in a train accident near Machu Picchu in Peru, where two trains carrying tourists collided near the archaeological site, leading to one railway worker's death and over 30 injuries. The collision occurred close to Qoriwayrachina, also an archaeological site, as per the railway company managing the route. An unspecified number of Britons were confirmed to be among those affected by the crash, with the Foreign Office stating that they are providing assistance to them and coordinating with local authorities. Following the incident, train services along the Machu Picchu-Cuzco line were halted, although the cause of the crash remains unknown. Photos and videos shared by local media showed damaged train carriages near a forest and rock wall. Machu Picchu, a popular destination attracting around 1.5 million visitors annually, was constructed by the Incas in the 15th century and functioned as a sanctuary for Incan rulers, featuring notable structures like the Temple of the Sun.
