Brine truck overturns in Durham on icy roads across Triangle.
A winter storm that passed through central North Carolina over the weekend is expected to complicate Monday morning commutes due to icy road conditions. Crews are working to clear major roads and highways, with one notable incident being a brine truck overturning on Interstate 40 East in Durham near mile marker 279 around 4:45 a.m. One eastbound lane was closed for a few hours, but the highway fully reopened by 7:25 a.m. While the recorded precipitation totals were small, the impacts on the roads were significant due to ice covering most of the state. Snow and sleet accumulation was generally minimal, while freezing rain led to around .25 inches of ice across the region, resulting in some power outages. The North Carolina Department of Transportation confirmed that all interstates and primary roads in all counties are affected by snow and ice from the storm, which caused road closures across the state. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported over 600 crashes within 24 hours of the storm until 6 p.m. Sunday, with more than 300 abandoned cars removed from the roads. Thankfully, there were no reported deadly crashes by early Sunday evening.
