BREAKING: 7-year-old boy dies from injuries in College Street head-on crash
A 7-year-old boy one witness said was not properly restrained has died from his injuries after Beaumont police say the driver of the car he was in sped away from the College Street/I-10 intersection, crossed the concrete median and slammed head-on into an SUV early Saturday morning. The child was found unresponsive in the wreckage but first responders regained a pulse. Police say, tragically, he died from his injuries. "We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones," BPD said in a statement. Police, fire, and EMS responded to the crash shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday in the 4000 block of College Street, in the westbound lanes in front of Beaumont Emergency Hospital. According to the Beaumont Police Department, preliminary findings indicate that 46-year-old Leosha Livings was driving a white Buick eastbound when witnesses observed the child sitting in the front passenger seat without proper restraints while the vehicle was stopped at a green traffic signal. Witnesses told investigators the Buick suddenly accelerated at a high rate of speed, crossed the concrete median, entered the opposing lanes of traffic, and crashed head-on into a Ford Expedition traveling in the opposite direction. Beaumont Fire-Rescue and Beaumont EMS responded to the scene and found the child unresponsive inside the vehicle. They removed him and emergency personnel immediately began lifesaving measures. They were able to restore the child's pulse before transport. The impact left Livings trapped inside the heavily-damaged Buick. Firefighters used hydraulic rescue equipment to cut her free from the wreckage. Both Livings and the child were transported to a local hospital. Because of the severity of the child's injuries, the child was later airlifted to a Houston-area medical facility for advanced treatment. Sunday, police told us he had died. Police said Livings remains in critical but stable condition. The driver of the Ford Expedition suffered minor injuries, was treated at a hospital and later released. The Beaumont Police Department Traffic Unit continues to investigate the crash. Police say potential charges are pending.
