BREAKING: 45-year-old woman killed walking on Interstate 10, freeway closed for six hours
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has identified a woman struck and killed while she was walking on Interstate 10 West late Saturday night, shutting down the westbound lanes for more than six hours. Chief Deputy Donta Miller identifies the victim as 45-year-old Lorena Christian of Beaumont. Miller says the driver stopped after hitting Christian. The Sheriff’s Office has assumed responsibility for the investigation with assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety. The investigation remains active, and no additional information is available for release at this time. Further updates will be provided as they become available. Interstate 10 West reopened shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday after Christian was struck and killed late Saturday night between Smith and Boyt Road. Justice of the Peace Ben Collins Sr. tells KFDM she died at the scene shortly before 11:45 p.m. and he’s ordered an autopsy. Due to the ongoing investigation, westbound traffic was diverted to Highway 124 at Smith Road, according to Chief Deputy Miller. Interstate 10 westbound remained closed until about 5:50 a.m. Sunday to allow first responders to safely conduct their investigation. Erik Keller shared a photo with KFDM showing the traffic backed up on I-10 West.
