Boy Riding E-Bike Seriously Injured in Car Accident on Del Mar Heights Road
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (May 4, 2026) -- A 12-year-old boy riding an e-bike was hospitalized following a collision with a Tesla SUV on Del Mar Heights Road in Carmel Valley, according to the San Diego Police Department. The traffic accident occurred around 5:40 p.m. on Saturday, May 2nd, in the 5500 block of Del Mar Heights Road, police said. The boy was struck by the front, passenger side of the SUV as he attempted to make a left turn from the westbound bike lane onto southbound Old Carmel Valley Road. The boy suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision and underwent surgery at the hospital for multiple brain bleeds and suffered a fractured collarbone, police said. The 64-year-old man driving the 2023 Tesla Model Y had been traveling west in the number one lane of Del Mar Heights Road at the time of the collision. Authorities do not suspect alcohol was a factor in the collision. The crash remains under investigation by the SDPD’s Traffic Division. Witnesses should call SDPD or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
