Boy, 17, killed in multi-vehicle crash involving semi in Inland Empire
A 17-year-old boy was killed in a multi-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck in Adelanto over the weekend, officials with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced. The March 20 incident occurred just before 11 p.m. on Highway 395 when the teen, a resident of Tehachapi, veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with a semi-truck and another vehicle. The 17-year-old, who was behind the wheel of a Dodge, has been identified as Michael Zavala. He was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries the following day, officials with the sheriff’s department said in a news release. The driver of the semi-truck was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital. The condition of that driver was not immediately available. Occupants in the third involved vehicle were uninjured. Investigators did not provide any additional details, including whether speed, alcohol and or drugs may have been a factor in the crash. Highway 395 was shut down for multiple hours while investigators worked to gather evidence and crews cleaned the roadway up.
