Bicyclist injured in Delaware County crash

A 65-year-old Galena man was seriously injured Friday morning when he was hit by a commercial truck while riding his bicycle in Genoa Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Troopers from the Delaware Post said the crash happened on Big Walnut Road just west of State Route 3. A preliminary investigation found a 2019 Freightliner driven by Luther Smith, 49, of Richmond, Kentucky, was traveling west on Big Walnut Road and stopped at a red light at State Route 3. A bicycle ridden by Joseph Stoll, 65, of Galena, was traveling northbound on the bike path. When the traffic light for Smith turned green, he began traveling westbound. Troopers said Stoll failed to stop and attempted to cross Big Walnut Road on the bike path, and he was struck by Smith. Stoll was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was taken to Riverside Hospital with serious injuries. The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Ohio Department of Transportation, Genoa Township Fire Department and EMS, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, and the Genoa Township Police Department. The crash remains under investigation.
