Apparent medical emergency leads to fatal crash in Castro Valley

Authorities believe the driver who died after veering off a Castro Valley road Friday afternoon may have suffered a medical emergency before crashing. The California Highway Patrol responded to 34400 Palomares Road at around 3 p.m., according to CHP logs, after a nearby homeowner called to report the white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck overturned on the side of the road. The two-lane road is in a rural area near Sunol Ridge. An Alameda County coroner was called to the area at 4 p.m. and the person was declared deceased. No information about the driver’s identity was immediately available. CHP Officer Nicole Mendibil said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Still, she said, the driver did not appear to suffer severe injuries in the wreck, leading authorities to believe a medical emergency had caused the death. The crash, however, remains under investigation.
