Anthony Joshua, ex-heavyweight champ, in car crash in Nigeria; 2 fatalities

Nigerian-British boxer and former world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, was in a car accident that tragically led to the loss of two lives in Nigeria. The Lagos state commissioner for information, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the accident and shared that the government had dispatched ambulances to the crash scene. Reports suggest that Joshua has been taken to a hospital after the incident. According to a spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps, the preliminary investigation indicates that the accident occurred due to excessive speed and loss of control during an overtaking maneuver before colliding with a parked truck. Images shared on social media portrayed Joshua being rescued from the wreckage, visibly in pain. The crash happened on a major road connecting Ogun state to Lagos. The commissioner of police for Ogun state, Lanre Ogunlowo, informed the AP that Joshua is receiving treatment for his injuries at an undisclosed hospital. Nigerian by descent, Joshua was sharpening his boxing skills and aiming to reclaim the world heavyweight title he lost to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021. He was coming off a victory against Jake Paul in Miami and had been in talks for a potential match against fellow Briton Tyson Fury in 2026.
