Alleged drunk driver kills woman, injures children in overnight Edinburg crash: Police
EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A woman was killed and two children were seriously injured in an overnight two-vehicle crash involving an alleged intoxicated driver, according to the Edinburg Police Department. Police said the crash happened late Saturday night at the intersection of Salinas Street and West Monte Cristo Road. Investigators say a westbound vehicle, driven by 31 year old Miguel Angel Suarez, ran a red light and struck another vehicle entering the intersection. The second vehicle was carrying five passengers, including three children: two boys, ages 9 and 5, and a 4-year-old girl, police said. The driver of the impacted vehicle, identified as 39 year old Martha Luna Miranda, was pronounced dead at the scene. Miranda’s husband, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was released from the hospital. The 4-year-old girl was also treated and released, police said. The two boys were transported to a San Antonio hospital for further medical treatment. Police said Suarez is expected to face charges of intoxication manslaughter and four counts of intoxication assault. Formal charges are pending, and his arraignment has not yet been announced. “This is a heartbreaking tragedy, especially because it involves children,” Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala said. “We urge everyone to make responsible choices, plan ahead, designate a driver, and never get behind the wheel while impaired.” This is an ongoing investigation.
