6-year-old dies in crash involving Temple Terrace police officer
TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (WFLA) -- A 6-year-old girl died in a crash involving a Temple Terrace police officer on Wednesday. The crash happened just before 4 p.m. near the intersection of East Fowler Ave. and North Drive, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. A Nissan Pathfinder, driven by a 36-year-old Tampa woman and carrying three girls ages 1, 6 and 8, made a U-turn and entered the path of an oncoming Ford Explorer SUV. The SUV, a Temple Terrace Police Department cruiser driven by a 25-year-old man, collided with the other car. The vehicles ended up in a ditch next to the roadway. Both drivers and the passengers in the Nissan were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 6-year-old later died at the hospital. "We are deeply saddened to learn that the female passenger involved in the crash has died as a result of her injuries. On behalf of our entire department, we extend our sincere condolences to her family and loved ones during this difficult time," a statement from the Temple Terrace Police Department said. The officer was on duty at the time of the crash. It remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
