5-year-old recovering from tragic boating accident

NEWBURGH, Ind. (WEHT) -- Fire officials are saying that five-year-old Jentry Pace is doing well. They say it's a miracle he survived the tragic boating accident from earlier this month. On Sunday, July 5, Ohio Township Fire Captain John Pace and his family were boating on Patoka Lake when a tragic accident happened "They've been tubing. And the kids all got off the tube,” Indiana Conservation Officer Joe Haywood said. “My understanding was they were kind of circling around to pick them up. And, you know, as gentry swimming into the the boat, the motor was still on and and accidentally got sucked in." Five year old Jentry suffered severe injuries in the accident but officials say time and quick actions from first responders and Pace's parents saved his life. “I mean, tensions were high,” Indiana Conservation Officer Tanner Doane said. “You could tell just with the severity of the wounds, what we were seeing that day or every minute was pressing and had to count.” "These seconds mattered and the decisions mattered from everybody who played a role,” Ohio Township Fire Battalion Chief Chris Watson said. “Without these people and without them making the proper decisions and their actions, we would not be celebrating the moments that we're sharing and having right now." Jentry has had several surgeries including fixing severed arteries and his achilleas on his right foot. He is still at Norton Children's Hospital. The Yard Foundation, a charity for firefighters and their families, heard about the incident and with the help of the community is raising thousands of dollars for Jentry.
