5-year-old boy killed in Maine crash; father and baby sister injured, police say

Maine State Police officials say a crash in Hancock County left a 5-year-old boy dead and his father and infant sister injured.A state trooper came upon the single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 193 in Township 22 shortly after 11:25 p.m. Thursday.The trooper found the 5-year-old in the front passenger seat in what police described as a "rapidly deteriorating" condition. State troopers immediately began life-saving measures until emergency medical services personnel arrived, but police said the boy was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.Police said the driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old Indiana man, and a 10-month-old girl who was a passenger in the vehicle were transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The man is the father of both children, according to authorities.Investigators said the vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection before striking an embankment.In addition, investigators said both children were not properly restrained at the time of the crash.Police said Route 9 was closed for several hours while the crash scene was processed.The crash remains under investigation.
