49ers HC Kyle Shanahan involved in a car accident; Chris Foerster to handle HC responsibilities
The San Francisco 49ers issued a statement on Saturday after head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Shanahan broke his nose, three ribs, and his hand, and needed over 40 stitches in his face. Shanahan also suffered a severe concussion after colliding with an SUV near his northern California home, according to Schefter. According to the statement issued by the team, Shanahan’s injuries were non-life-threatening: > “San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers. Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care. Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster along with team coordinators will handle head coach responsibilities during this period.” Schefter tweeted that Shanahan informed the coaching staff of the accident on Tuesday, while the players are slowly getting the news after the car accident was confirmed today. Schefter added that paramedics took Shanahan to the local hospital, where he spent much of the day before being released. The other driver was not injured, according to Palo Alto Lieutenant Nicholas Martinez. There were no drugs or alcohol involved, per Martinez. Neither driver was cited for the collision, while both were cooperative with the police.
