33-year-old man dead after base jumping accident in Rock Canyon, identified
PROVO, Utah (ABC4) -- The person who died in Rock Canyon in Provo on Saturday afternoon has been identified. Wesson Huff, 33, has been identified by police as the individual who died. According to Police, Huff was base jumping from the top of the canyon and is believed to have experienced a parachute malfunction. He was reportedly an avid adventurer and experienced skydiver. This comes after police posted on social media earlier on Saturday saying, "Police are investigating a death from a suspected fall at Rock Canyon. The trailhead and canyon area will be closed for the next few hours. Please avoid the area while investigation is completed. Thank you." Witnesses reportedly saw someone fall from a cliff face and police believe the individual may have been rock climbing. It was later determined that he was actually base jumping in an area of Rock Canyon known as "Bad Bananas." In an interview with Provo Police Public Information Officer, Janna-Lee Holland, she confirmed that the fall occurred at approximately 12:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 21. She also added that Rock Canyon has had a number of fatalities in the past few years, warning that this area is notoriously dangerous and that the public should use caution. "Our sympathies are with the family and loved ones of Wesson Huff," Provo Police wrote in their press release.
