3 hospitalized when ambulance rolls over in US-131 crash

WAYLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A patient who was being treated in the back of an ambulance had to be airlifted to the hospital after the rig flipped over in a crash on US-131 near Wayland, deputies said. Just before 7 p.m., the Life EMS ambulance was headed north on US-131 north of 129th Avenue in Wayland Township taking a patient to Grand Rapids when the driver of a pickup truck behind it fell asleep and crashed into the back of the ambulance, the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office said. The rig lost control and went into a ditch, rolling over and landing on its roof. The patient being treated in the back of the ambulance had to be airlifted to the hospital by AeroMed with serious injuries. Both the driver of the ambulance and the person tending to the patient in the back had to be taken to the hospital by way of another ambulance. Their injuries were not life-threatening, deputies said. Northbound US-131 was shut down near 128th Avenue following the crash and deputies asked drivers to avoid the area. The sheriff’s office is investigating.
