SANFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — Troopers are investigating what led to a head-on collision that left three people dead, two of whom were in the military, on a major road in Harnett County. An alert from the North Carolina Department of Transportation went out around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, notifying drivers of a crash closing both sides of NC-87 near Broadway Road. North Carolina State Highway Patrol told CBS 17 that a Toyota Camry was traveling on NC-87 when it crossed the middle of the road and struck a Chevy Z71, head-on. The investigating troopers said the driver of the Chevy pickup truck died at the scene. Troopers said they discovered the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. According to the investigators, two of the three passengers in the Camry also died from this crash. Troopers said the third passenger of the Camry was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Troopers told CBS 17 that all three passengers in the Camry were stationed at Fort Bragg. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by troopers. NCDOT said NC-87 reopened around 7 a.m. Saturday.
