3 children, adult climb up embankment after car crashes, lands in pond, rescuers say

An adult and three children were injured in a high-speed crash in South Carolina Friday night, with the vehicle striking multiple objects before landing in a pond, according to Colleton County Fire-Rescue officials. The crash happened about 10:30 p.m. on Augusta Highway in Colleton County. Rescuers said the car was driving in the southbound lanes when it crossed into the northbound lane, went down an embankment, and struck a driveway culvert. The impact caused the car to become airborne and collide with a power pole, breaking it into several pieces, according to the rescuers' report. Officials said the vehicle then jumped a driveway, struck a parked car, and hit several small trees approximately 15 feet above the ground. At some point, the car turned backward, landed in a pond, and filled with water. The adult and children in the car escaped the submerged car and climbed up the embankment surrounding the pond. Rescuers said a bystander then placed them in their car and left the scene. 9-1-1 operators were able to stop the bystander’s vehicle on Augusta Highway near Peirce Road, allowing firefighter-paramedics to evaluate the patients. The patients were treated at the scene for what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. The children were taken to the Shawn Jenkins Children's Trauma Center at MUSC, while the adult was taken to the Trauma Center at MUSC. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
