26-year-old dies after car crashes into concrete pillar on I-5 in Clairemont

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A 26-year-old man from San Diego lost his life Sunday night after his Infiniti sedan rear-ended another vehicle on Interstate 5 before veering off the road and crashing head-on into a concrete pillar, according to CHP. The crash reportedly happened around 11:41 p.m. Sunday, when the 26-year-old was driving the Infiniti northbound on I-5 near Clairemont Drive when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle struck the rear of a Honda SUV. According to CHP, after striking the Honda, the Infiniti continued off the roadway and crashed head-on into a concrete pillar. The driver of the Infiniti was transported to the hospital with major injuries, where he later passed away. The driver and passengers of the Honda were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to authorities. A toxicology report is pending to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor. The cause and sequence of events are being investigated by CHP San Diego.
