2 killed in small plane crash on Catalina Island, supervisor confirms
Two people were killed after a small plane crashed on Catalina Island Thursday afternoon, officials have confirmed to KTLA. The crash happened at approximately 12:30 p.m. in the Avalon area. The plane, identified as a factory Sling, had two people on board, according to the FAA. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said they received a call about the downed aircraft on the south side of the island, just south of the botanical gardens. LASD and LACOFD responded. They reportedly located the plane in a ravine. Supervisor Janice Hahn said the Los Angeles County Fire Department told her paramedics who arrived first on the scene confirmed that two people were killed in the crash. LASD Avalon's captain told KTLA he's not sure if the plane was coming or going, but the location is nowhere near the airport. The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA will investigate the cause of the crash. No other details were released about the crash. Supervisor Hahn released a statement that said, in part, "This is a tragedy and my heart goes out to the loved ones of those who lost their lives. I am grateful to our paramedics and Sheriff’s deputies who quickly reached this remote area and are handling this incident with professionalism and care."
