2 killed in fiery, explosive crash in Lakewood after speeding into a power pole
A driver and passenger were killed early Saturday after a speeding vehicle crashed into a power pole and railroad crossing equipment before bursting into flames in the Tacoma area, authorities said. The crash occurred around 1:20 a.m. after a vehicle traveling westbound on 74th Street at a very high rate of speed passed a Lakewood police officer, Lakewood police Sgt. Charles Porche said. Before the officer could catch up after activating emergency lights and siren, the vehicle crossed lanes and crashed into a power pole and railroad crossing infrastructure near 74th Street and South Tacoma Way, Porche said. The driver and passenger were immediately ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The car caught fire immediately after the crash, and fireworks inside the vehicle began exploding, making it difficult for first responders to determine whether the occupants remained inside. Officers later determined both victims had been ejected. Authorities did not release the ages or sexes of the victims. It was not immediately known whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. Because the collision occurred within Tacoma city limits, the Tacoma Police Department is leading the investigation. No other injuries were reported.
