2 dead in boat crash on Colorado River near Topock Gorge
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — One man died on the scene and another died at a hospital after a boat crashed on the shoreline of the Colorado River on Tuesday. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office identified the victims as Noah Welch, 33, and James Rutherford Jr., 53, both of California. Investigators determined that the speedboat was northbound on the river at high speed when it went out of control and struck the rock shoreline on the Arizona side of the river. The boat continued on, coming to rest in the reeds on the California shoreline. The boat, a 2002 25-foot Daves Custom Boat, was heavily damaged in the crash, photos from MCSO showed. The site of the crash is about 125 miles south of Las Vegas. Deputies from the MCSO Division of Boating Safety responded to the scene just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday. First responders from the San Bernardino County Fire Department and the Lake Havasu City Fire Department were also on the scene. The crash remains under investigation, authorities said.
