2 dead after wrong-way crash on I-55 near Springfield
SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) -- Two people were killed early Monday morning in a wrong-way crash on I-55 in Sangamon County, State Police said. The crash happened south of Springfield at Milepost 87.5, near the exit to Lake Shore Drive. Officials said troopers responded around 1 a.m. to a two-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes; one of the vehicles was driving southbound, and the other was driving northbound. The drivers of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene. In a news release, Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said they are a 42-year-old woman from Wentzville, Mo., and a 51-year-old woman from Girard. Allmon did not identify them, pending next-of-kin notification. He added that autopsies are scheduled to take place on Monday. Officials added that a passenger in one of the vehicles was taken to an area hospital with injuries. They did not say what condition the passenger is in or which vehicle they were in. Southbound I-55 was shut down for five hours while first responders were on the scene. The highway reopened just after 6 a.m. The crash and deaths remain under investigation by the Sangamon County Coroner's Office and the Illinois State Police.
