16-year-old charged with murder in Winston-Salem erratic driving crash that killed 61-year-old

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — The 16-year-old accused of driving away from authorities in a deadly crash is now being charged with murder after a 61-year-old man died as a result of injuries he sustained in the crash, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. At around 12:30 p.m. on June 18, deputies saw a vehicle “driving erratically” in the area of Indiana Avenue and North Patterson Avenue. They attempted to pull the car over; however, the driver refused to stop and a chase began but quickly came to an end due to high speeds. At 2:45 p.m. that same day, investigators spotted the same vehicle driving erratically and once again tried to pull the car over. The driver sped away for a second time and crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Patterson Avenue and Germanton Road. 61-year-old Robert "Bob" Anthony Marcis was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. Initially, the driver, 16-year-old Eleazar Bernadino Medina, was charged with the following: Eleazar Medina was given no bond for those charges. He is being charged as an adult. Eleazar Medina's mother, 35-year-old Adilene Medina Calleja, was also charged in the investigation with the following: She was also given no bond. The family of Bob Marcis was forced to make a heartbreaking decision in the days that followed the crash that left him seriously injured and on life support. The family decided to take Bob Marcis off of life support on Tuesday, five days after the crash. Don Marcis says his son's life was never supposed to end like this. His family is in Wisconsin, and his father couldn’t make the trip, so he video-called to see his son one last time.  “I’ll miss his phone calls, happy birthday, happy Father’s Day, Merry Christmas, and all that. We talked a lot at least once a week,” Don Marcis said. Bob Marcis had left work early Thursday afternoon for an eye exam. His family says that's what brought him to the intersection of Patterson Avenue and Germanton Road around 2:45 p.m. That is when 16-year-old Eleazar Medina allegedly crashed into his vehicle Members of Marcis' family spoke about the difficult decision to take their loved one off of life support. “He would be bedridden and need constant care, you know, feeding. Probably a nursing home type of thing, and he would not want that,” said his brother, Bill Marcis. His family takes some comfort in knowing that Bob was an organ donor, so a piece of Bob will live on, giving others the gift of life.  “I’m pretty proud of his decision to do that. It makes me feel good to know that he has given back. We’ve been given life, and he is giving it back to help others, so that’s something to be proud of,” said Bill. There's a lot his family has to be proud of. They say Bob was hardworking, landing a job with his uncle, NASCAR driver Dave Marcis.  “He went south, got a job with my uncle, worked for him, I’m thinking about 20 years,” said Bill. Bill says his brother even tried out racing for himself.  His brother also says Bob was strong. He was a cancer survivor, and, in a bittersweet twist, his family learned Bob is still cancer-free. "When they did the brain scan for the accident MRI, that they did that showed the tear that he was cancer-free,” said Bill. As his family said their final goodbyes, they hold onto their memories together.  After Bob Marcis died as a result of his injuries, the FCSO announced that they are now charging Eleazar Medina with second-degree murder. Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough Jr. shared the following statement:
