14-year-old Salem-area boy killed in Lancaster Drive SE pedestrian crash Tuesday

A 14-year-old boy was killed in a vehicle-pedestrian crash Tuesday evening on Lancaster Drive Southeast in Marion County, prompting a lengthy road closure as deputies investigated. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said it received a report of the crash at about 5:15 p.m. June 2 on Lancaster Drive Southeast near Mahrt Avenue South. First responders arrived within minutes, and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Lancaster Drive Southeast was closed for more than three hours while deputies conducted their investigation. In a social media post Tuesday around 7 p.m., the sheriff’s office said Lancaster Drive Southeast was closed between State Street and Mahrt Avenue Southeast and urged drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes. No arrests have been made. The victim was identified as a 14-year-old male from the Salem area. The sheriff’s office said no additional identifying information would be released out of respect for the family. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones, as well as the first responders who assisted at the scene.
