MADISON COUNTY, Ind. — A 14-year-old was killed and a 10-year-old was injured in a crash in rural Madison County on Monday. According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, first responders were called to a private property located just outside of Summitville around 4:45 p.m. to render assistance at an ATV crash scene. After an investigation, DNR officers determined that a 10-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy were involved in the crash. A spokesperson for the Madison County Coroner's Office has confirmed that the 14-year-old boy died at the scene. The DNR reported that the 10-year-old girl was hospitalized after the crash. Officials believe the girl is currently in stable condition. Investigators indicated that the 10-year-old and 14-year-old were in the same bench-seat, metal-caged ATV when the crash occurred. The 10-year-old was the driver and the 14-year-old was the passenger. The crash happened when the 10-year-old hit a bump near a pond. The 14-year-old was ejected from the ATV during the crash. Per the DNR, neither of the juveniles were wearing helmets when the crash occurred. The agency also told FOX59/CBS4 that it is illegal for individuals under the age of 18 to operate or ride in ATVs without helmets on. According to the DNR, state law also requires ATV operators and passengers under the age of 14 to be supervised by an adult. The Madison County Coroner's Office has indicated that it will release additional information on the decedent on Tuesday. This is a developing story; check back for updates.
