13 displaced, two hospitalized after car crashes into apartment building on Fernwood Court in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) -- 13 people have been displaced, and two people have been hospitalized, after a car crashed into an apartment building on Fernwood Court in Virginia Beach Tuesday evening, according to the Virginia Beach Fire Department. On April 21 at around 5:14 p.m., the department and EMS units were dispatched to a report of a technical rescue confined space - vehicle in a building with potential collapse and people trapped inside. When crews arrived to the scene in the 350 block of Fernwood Court by 5:20 p.m., they discovered a two-story apartment building with a car fully inside of it. The call was then upgraded to include the appropriate technical rescue resources. The EMS units upgraded their response based on the situation and potential patient count. An initial assessment led to the discovery of two victims: a kid inside the apartment and a male driver, who were both trapped inside the building. The two people were removed by 5:58 p.m. and transported to local hospitals. Crews conducted a primary and secondary search to make sure there were no other victims. EMS treated one other person for breathing difficulties, but they weren't transported. 13 total occupants were displaced as a result of the incident. The Red Cross was contacted to assist with housing. At the scene, 10 On Your Side spoke to nearby residents who witnessed the aftermath. "I was sitting inside my apartment at the apartment complex and I heard all the sirens, I come out and see all the lights I come out to make sure everything's okay and when I got here I saw more people lining up and I saw the vehicle completely on the inside of the apartment, when they wedged it out a little bit I saw a kid with a C Collar," one resident named Ricky Dodge said. "It sounded like an explosion going off," nearby resident James Morgan said. At the time of the crash, Police were still investigating what caused it. Some believed it may have been a medical emergency, but everyone was thankful it didn't turn out worse. "It's very unreal because stuff like this doesn't usually happen out here it's usually quiet out here and to have this type of response just shows that the City of Virginia Beach, Police and EMS are on top of things," Dodge said. No other injuries were reported.
