1 killed in head-on crash on NC 16 in Wilkes County

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — One person is dead after a head-on crash on a North Carolina highway in Wilkes County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. At around 7:35 a.m. on Wednesday, troopers responded to a head-on crash on NC 16 near Elisha Staley Road in Wilkes County. Investigators say that 21-year-old Obaldo Basaldua-Acevedo was driving a 2025 Honda Civic north on NC 16 when he went left of center and struck a 2008 Ford Ranger that was going south on NC 16. Basaldua-Acevedo was taken to a local hospital, where he later died as a result of injuries he sustained in the crash. The driver of the Ford suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Troopers say neither speed nor impairment was a factor in the crash. No charges are being filed.
