1 dead in overnight plane crash at Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield
ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - A person was killed overnight Tuesday after a small plane crashed at Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the crash occurred around 3 a.m. on the east end of the south airport runway. Officials were called to the airport for reports of a downed plane. Upon their arrival, they discovered an Aero Commander 500B, a small cargo plane, that crashed short of the runway. The pilot, an adult male, was the only person on the aircraft. He was pronounced dead at the scene. St. Louis County Police Department Public Information Officer Vera Clay said that the pilot had left the Spirit of St. Louis Airport overnight and "at some point" made an attempt to return to the airport. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and FAA have been notified. An investigation is ongoing. The St. Louis County Police Department are assisting the Chesterfield Police Department following the crash.
