1 dead in head-on crash between car, semi in Tippecanoe Co.
TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. — One person is dead after a passenger car and a semi that was carrying anhydrous ammonia were involved in a head-on crash on Friday. According to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office, officers were first called to the 9900 block of U.S. 231 on reports of a personal injury crash around 12:30 p.m. The semi was carrying over 7,000 galons of anhydrous ammonia, which was not released during the crash; however, it needed to be transferred to another vehicle. An investigation revealed that a car was heading south on U.S. 231 when it crossed the centerline and crashed into a semi that was heading north. It remains unclear what caused the car to cross the centerline. The driver of the car was pronounced dead on the scene due to the injuries in the crash. The semi driver was reportedly wearing his seat belt and declined medical treatment at the scene. According to TCSO, alcohol or drugs are suspected to be factors in the crash at this time; however, a toxicology test will be conducted per protocol. The Tippecanoe County Coroner's Office is investigating and working to identify the driver positively. The incident closed the roadway between County Road 800 South and State Road 28 in Romney for over seven hours. No additional information has been made available at the time of this article's publication.
