1 dead in crash near Loris after vehicle overturns, strikes tree
HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) -- One person has died after a single-vehicle crash in the area of Highway 701 near Loris, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Wednesday afternoon. Horry County Fire Rescue crews responded just before 2 p.m. to the area of South Highway 701 and McNabb Shortcut Road where the involved car overturned. Extrication operations were used to remove those who were trapped in the vehicle. A 2012 KIA SUV was traveling northbound when it crossed left of center, ran off the road, overturned, and struck a tree, Master Trooper Joseph Rowell said. Buddy Henry lives nearby and called 911. He told News13 he and his daughter saw the scene and got out to help. “But I seen everybody run to the vehicle and whatnot, and I couldn't do no better or nothing different than anybody else could have done," Henry said. "So the best thing I could have done was call 911. That was the biggest help I could have done. So that's what I did” News13 saw crews on scene working, coming in and out of the woods where Henry says the victim crashed. “Couldn't even see the vehicle, the vehicle was so far into the trees, I couldn't even see it," Henry said. "So they hit them trees pretty hard.” Henry says she was apart of their community and whatever led up to the situation doesn't take away from the fact that they lost one of their own. “That’s the last thing I would want to see," Henry said. "And it hurts just thinking about it. A life is a life regardless of who it is, what they were doing. A life is a life.” News13 has reached out to the coroner's office to confirm her identity. The Horry County Police also assisted on scene.
