1 dead, 1 seriously injured after 2-car crash on Oregon highway

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A head-on crash on Highway 126 on Friday resulted in one death and another person getting seriously injured, Oregon State Police announced. The crash occurred just after noon near milepost 103.5 in Deschutes County. Investigators say that the driver of a black GMC Sierra pulling a tandem axle dump trailer was traveling west on the highway near Redmond when it "attempted to avoid slowing traffic and crossed into the eastbound travel lane." The driver of an eastbound gray Honda Accord collided head-on with the trailer, officials said. A 59-year-old passenger in the Honda, Michelle Pettit, was declared dead at the scene, while the driver of the Honda was hospitalized with serious injuries. The driver of the GMC was uninjured and cooperated with investigators following the crash, OSP said.
