Wrong-way driver arrested after deadly crash: DPS

CAMERON COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating an early morning two-vehicle head-on collision that left a woman dead. At approximately 5:07 a.m. on Saturday, DPS troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on US 77 south of Orphanage Road in Cameron County. A preliminary investigation determined that a green Chevrolet Camaro, occupied by a male driver, was going north on the southbound lane of US 77, according to a news release from DPS. A silver Honda Accord, occupied by two women, was going southbound on US 77 and collided head-on with the Chevrolet. The passenger of the Honda, identified as 53 year old Adelaida Gomez of Conroe, died from her injuries at the scene, the release stated. The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 22 year old Joey Gael Estrada of Austin, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Estrada was transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center for medical clearance and arrested on charges of criminal negligent homicide and possession of a controlled substance PG 2. Estrada was booked into Cameron County jail. DPS did not identify or report the status of the second woman in the Honda. This is an ongoing investigation.
