Woman who caused deadly crash on Oregon highway in 2024 arrested in Florida, officials say

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A 35-year-old woman who caused a fatal crash on Hwy 97 in 2024 was taken into custody in Florida by U.S. Marshals on Friday, Oregon State Police announced. Desiree Johnson, who is from Florida, had a nationwide warrant out for her arrest after she failed to appear in court in 2024. She has been charged with criminally negligent homicide, second-degree assault and reckless driving. The crash took place on Feb. 29, 2024, near milepost 174 in Klamath County. Johnson was driving a semi-truck and trailer on the highway when she lost control of the vehicle, causing it to jackknife in the roadway. The truck swerved into the path of a Honda Pilot, driven by 37-year-old Elise Farrens, which struck the trailer, according to OSP. Farrens was declared dead at the scene. A passenger in the Honda, Daviana Trussell, 23, was critically injured in the crash. "Trussell, who was pregnant, tragically suffered the loss of her child due to injuries sustained during the crash," officials said. Johnson is being held at the Pinellas County Jail in Florida, where she awaits extradition to Oregon.
