Woman from Plant City sentenced to 67 years for second deadly DUI incident
A judge in Tampa has sentenced Jennifer Carvajal to serve 67 years in prison for driving drunk and causing a crash that resulted in a fatality. During a three-hour hearing, Carvajal tearfully apologized to the family of Pedro Carbajal, her cousin who was killed in the crash, as well as to the others who were injured. The judge, G. Gregory Green, expressed disbelief that Carvajal, now 28, had committed the same deadly crime for a second time and ordered a penalty that exceeds the state guidelines. Carvajal's troubled past, including a history of abuse and mental health struggles, was acknowledged in the court, but this time around, it did not sway the judge towards a lighter sentence. The details of the events leading up to the crash were recounted by one of the survivors, Lexcia Gonzalez. Carvajal's past conviction for a previous drunk driving incident that resulted in a death was also highlighted. This is an ongoing story, and for updates, please visit TampaBay.com.
