Woman and 6-year-old child die in Rocky Mount crash; 3 others injured, police say

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WNCN) — Two people are dead, including a child, following a two-vehicle crash in Rocky Mount Thursday afternoon, police said. According to the Rocky Mount Police Department, a Chrysler 200 sedan and a Ford Transit van crashed at around 2 p.m. on Sunset Avenue near Church View Drive in west Rocky Mount. The driver of the Chrysler 200, 24-year-old Carmen Elizabeth Poland of Rocky Mount, and a six-year-old passenger died in the crash. Another woman in the Chrysler was taken to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville to be treated for her injuries, according to Rocky Mount police. Police did not say if the Chrysler 200 occupants were related. Two men who were passengers in the Ford Transit suffered minor injuries and were treated at UNC Nash Health Care. The man driving the Ford Transit was not injured, according to Rocky Mount police. A GoFundMe was launched on Friday to help the mother of two who were killed in the crash. The GoFundMe said that Melissa Battle was seriously injured in the crash that killed Carmen Poland and her little sister, Lilly Davis. The incident is under investigation by the Rocky Mount Police Department Traffic Enforcement and Crash Reconstruction Unit. As of Friday, no charges have been filed.
