Why was U.S. 290 closed Tuesday? Here's what we know about the shut down
The eastbound lanes of U.S. 290 in northwest Houston reopened after shutting down for hours due to a fatal crash Tuesday morning, according to the live Houston TranStar traffic map and local authorities. A vehicle crashed at the highway's Gessner Road ramp near Little York Road in the Fairbanks area at around 3:36 a.m., according to city officials. Footage by OnScene TV showed a single sedan that appeared to be the only vehicle involved in the crash. The car struck the ramp and caught fire at some point, according to Houston police. All lanes had reopened shortly before 8:50 a.m., according to Harris County Sheriff's Office Lt. Terry Garza. Deputies with the Office of Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman were also stationed at the scene, according to authorities.
