Westbound Green River Tunnel Reopens 8 Months After Deadly 26-Vehicle Crash

After the westbound lanes of the Green River Tunnel on Interstate 80 were open to traffic, Steve Core, a city spokesman for Green River, reflected on the tragic 26-vehicle crash that shut down the tunnel for over eight months. The crash occurred on Valentine's Day around 11:30 a.m., as residents were rushing to buy last-minute gifts. Core witnessed the smoke from the tunnel and learned that a fire started on the westbound side. Emergency responders from various agencies worked tirelessly to manage the aftermath of the fiery crash, which tragically resulted in three deaths and multiple injuries. The NTSB reported that the crash was initiated by a Toyota Tundra pickup that lost control near the tunnel exit. A survivor of the incident who captured footage shared the harrowing experience of escaping the tunnel. Although the westbound tunnel has now reopened, the Wyoming Department of Transportation advises drivers to adhere to the reduced speed limit and proceed with caution due to ongoing maintenance work.
