Weekend car crashes more likely in Mississippi: statistics

A recent analysis by H&P Law has found that Mississippi's roads are particularly hazardous for car accidents, especially during weekends. Scaled to the state's population, there are an estimated 6,680 crashes annually, averaging 266 each weekend. Mississippi has the highest rate of crashes per capita in the nation. It's worth noting that 49% of fatal car crashes in the state occur on weekends. Despite a 52% decrease in road fatalities between 1975 and 2023, Mississippi had the highest crash fatality rate in the latest data available. More broadly, unintentional deaths rank as the third leading cause of death in the state, with Mississippi holding the 13th highest rate nationally. Additionally, the state has the third highest percentage of uninsured drivers at 22.2%, which is 58% above the national average. To address these issues, aside from practicing safe driving habits, it's important for drivers to maintain their vehicles properly and be prepared for road conditions. The Mississippi Department of Transportation has recently recommended certain safety measures for drivers to follow.
