Virginia lawmakers express safety concerns following deadly D.C. aircraft crash

Washington, D.C. (WAVY) - Recently, a group of Virginia’s representatives, including Don Beyer, Suhas Subramanyam, James Walkinshaw, Bobby Scott, Jennifer McClellan, and Eugene Vindman, from the congressional delegation, released a statement regarding Section 373 of the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2026. This section focuses on enhancing safety measures for manned rotary-wing aircraft following a tragic midair collision on Jan. 29, 2025, at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport which resulted in the loss of 67 lives. The lawmakers expressed their shared concerns with the Families of Flight 5342 and the National Transportation Safety Board regarding the safety implications of the provision in the act, citing potential risks in the airspace surrounding Reagan National Airport due to the fatal collision earlier this year. The representatives criticized the provision for allowing waivers for training flights, which could exacerbate the already congested airspace. They stressed that the current provision does not align with the NTSB's initial safety recommendations and lacks crucial improvements essential for enhancing visibility, safety, and communication between military and civilian aircraft in the D.C. area. Congress has pledged to work swiftly with their colleagues and transportation authorities to address these issues and ensure that air safety in the region is upheld before any waivers are granted.
