Videos reveal CHP not actively pursuing driver in fatal crash of Oakland teacher.
Officers from the California Highway Patrol were not actively chasing a driver who was involved in a deadly crash that claimed the life of a beloved teacher from Castlemont High School, according to recently released video footage acquired through a public records request. The extended aerial, dashcam, and bodycam video from CHP provides a clearer sequence of events leading up to the tragic incident on May 28 that took the life of Marvin Boomer while he was out for a walk with his partner, Nina Woodruff, on East 21st Street. The footage was made public to KTVU a day following renewed calls from community advocates to cease high-speed chases on city streets. The Oakland Police Commission also stated that systemic adjustments are necessary in how officers engage suspects. However, in this specific case, it was CHP officers and not Oakland police who were involved. CHP officers operate under a pursuit policy that differs from that of the Oakland Police Department, where pursuits on city streets must not exceed 50 mph unless authorized by a supervisor. The CHP maintains that their officers were not actively pursuing the driver, 18-year-old Eric Scott Hernandez-Garcia, at the moment of the collision. Hernandez-Garcia had been driving his mother's Infiniti G35, which was previously linked to reckless driving. The pursuit began when CHP attempted to stop Hernandez-Garcia on that fateful day, resulting in a chain of events until the tragic crash that claimed Boomer's life.
