VIDEO: Suspect in fatal hit-and-run crash confesses to Albuquerque police
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New video shows the moments police caught up with the suspect accused of driving away after hitting and killing an Albuquerque man who was biking to work. Body camera video shows Gilbert Nunez-Guzman talking to Albuquerque police after investigators say he left the scene of a crash that killed 47-year-old cyclist Robert Montoya. Officers caught up with Nunez-Guzman hours after the May 11 crash at Carlisle and Claremont. Police say his girlfriend called to share what happened and their location. The Albuquerque Police Department then sent a drone to a hotel on Ellison, where they found Nunez Guzman's damaged car. Before officers took him into custody, Nunez-Guzman said, "I was getting off of work, I work graveyard." Admitting what happened, Nunez-Guzman said he didn't see the bicyclist in the crosswalk as he turned through the intersection. Nunez-Guzman: "I was like, steering this way… as I'm like turning, I'm looking this way, and then, when I looked again, I saw a guy come out of nowhere and hit me… and it freaked me out." Accused of leaving the scene, Nunez-Guzman explained what he was thinking. Nunez-Guzman: " You know, I thought everything was going to be a good day today and then that happened. I just freaked out, I just panicked and now… I'm here. And I didn't mean to hurt nobody. I just didn't… didn't expect to see him coming out like that." Suspecting the car would be taken away, Nunez-Guzman told officers he removed items and put them in his room, thinking his girlfriend would need them. Detective: "So you took some stuff out of the car?" Nunez-Guzman: "Yeah, I took the car seat."Detective: "You took the license plate off?"Nunez-Guzman: "Yeah."Detective: "Did you take anything else off the car?"Nunez-Guzman: "No." The license plate, detectives wanted back. They also wanted the Baby On Board magnet back as evidence. Detective: "What about the yellow magnet? Where'd you put that?" Nunez-Guzman: "Oh, I have it on the fridge." Detective: "It's just plastered on the fridge?"Nunez-Guzman: "Just a magnet, yeah. I'm surprised no one stole it from us while it was on there." Paramedics checked Nunez-Guzman before officers took him to the Metropolitan Detention Center. Nunez-Guzman is facing charges, including leaving the scene of a crash with great bodily harm and evidence tampering. He's pleaded not guilty and is out of jail while awaiting trial.
