US takes responsibility for fatal midair crash near National Airport: 'A disaster waiting to occur'
The United States has acknowledged responsibility for a midair collision that occurred in January, resulting in the tragic deaths of 67 individuals. The collision involved an American Airlines flight and an Army helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The court filing stated that the U.S. breached its duty of care for passengers on the commercial flight and the Army helicopter, both of which were operating in busy airspace near Washington, D.C. Plaintiffs, including Rachel Crafton, widow of one of the victims, argued that the accident was a result of the defendants' failure to address safety risks and resolve previous "near miss" incidents in the area. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the crash. Crafton's attorney, Robert A. Clifford, noted that while the government has accepted responsibility, American Airlines and PSA Airlines are seeking to dismiss claims against them, stating that they are not solely responsible for the tragedy. The airlines have not yet provided a comment on the matter.
