UPS plane crash: Repeated failure of a particular part on multiple aircraft
Investigators suspect that a part which had previously failed multiple times played a role in the tragic UPS plane crash in Kentucky last year. The National Transportation Safety Board revealed that Boeing had alerted plane owners about the faulty component in 2011 after four previous instances of failure were documented on McDonnell Douglas planes, which were later acquired by Boeing. Despite the cracks found in engine parts during regular maintenance, the crucial defects were not detected, sparking concerns about the maintenance procedures. The crash investigation is reminiscent of a 1979 incident involving an American Airlines DC-10, which prompted the grounding of 274 DC-10s worldwide. While Boeing's service bulletin recommended replacing the flawed bearings, questions linger about the effectiveness of the solution provided. The NTSB is continuing its investigation, focusing on the part suspected to have contributed to the UPS crash, but the specific cause of the engine detachment is yet to be determined due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
