Update on Chatham, Illinois crash that resulted in 4 fatalities at after-school program

The Illinois State Police have reported that the driver involved in the tragic incident where a car crashed into a building housing an after-school program in Chatham, Illinois, resulting in the deaths of three children and one teenager, was found not to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. According to the state police, initial tests showed that 44-year-old Marianne Akers, the driver, did not have alcohol or controlled substances in her system. Authorities have suggested that a potential medical emergency may have contributed to the crash, but investigations are still ongoing. Charges have not been filed yet, and the state police will collaborate with the Sangamon County State's Attorney once the investigation is complete to decide on appropriate actions. The tragic incident occurred on Monday when Akers' car collided with the east side of the YNOT Outdoors Summer and After School Camp building, leading to multiple casualties. The victims who lost their lives were identified as Ainsley Johnson, Kathryn Corley, Alma Buhnerkempe, and Riley Britton. Akers, who used to work for the Illinois State Police and a local high school, is currently an office assistant at the Illinois Department of Transportation. Despite her employment background, she has not been taken into custody, and her level of involvement in the incident is still under investigation. Following the crash, six children were injured, with one still in critical condition as of Tuesday.
