UPDATE: Coroner shares details on crash that claimed life of LLCC baseball player

UPDATE on 4/30 at 7:42 a.m. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) -- The Livingston County Coroner released more information Thursday morning on the crash that claimed the life of 20-year-old Michael Roberson. The exact time the accident happened is unknown right now, but investigators believe it was in the early morning hours of Wednesday. Coroner Michael E. Renner said in a release that State Police in Pontiac were called around 6:07 a.m. to the scene of a vehicle submerged in the Mazon River, south of N. 2400 East Road near Dwight. Renner said that Roberson, who is from Minooka, was traveling back to college in a Honda Civic sedan. The vehicle was heading north on Old. Rt. 66 when it crossed through the southbound lane and into the west ditch. It then continued a couple hundred feet in the grass area along the guard rail and onto a concrete surface by the river bank, before coming to a stop upside-down in the river. A passerby noticed the vhiecle in the water and called 911. The crash remains under investigation by State Police and the Livingston County Coroner. A cause of death is also pending examination and toxicology testing. Dwight Fire and EMS, Odell Fire and the Livingston County Sheriff's Office all assisted on the scene. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. LLCC Athletics announced via social media that baseball player Michael Roberson passed away following Wednesday's crash. The Loggers' baseball roster lists Roberson as a sophomore who played catcher. Roberson was from Minooka and was a graduate of Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox. Before joining the Loggers, Roberson also played catcher at John. A. Logan College in Carterville. "Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, teammates and friends," LLCC Athletics said.
