Undocumented immigrant failed CDL exam 10 times in 2 months prior to deadly Florida accident.

An undocumented immigrant truck driver who was involved in a fatal crash in Florida had a history of struggling with his commercial driver's license (CDL) tests, failing the exam multiple times before eventually obtaining his license in 2023. This individual, Harjinder Singh, allegedly entered the US illegally in 2018 and is accused of causing a crash in Fort Pierce, Florida, that resulted in the deaths of three individuals. Investigations revealed that Singh had difficulty with both the CDL knowledge exam and English proficiency, yet he was still able to obtain a CDL in Washington state and later in California. Video footage released later showed Singh experiencing language barriers during an encounter with the police in New Mexico, further highlighting his struggles with English. In response to this incident, the Florida Attorney General's Office filed a lawsuit against California and Washington, aiming to prevent these states from issuing CDLs to undocumented immigrants due to concerns about safety and compliance with federal requirements. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized the importance of English language proficiency for big rig drivers and announced measures to enforce this requirement, following the Trump administration's decision to withhold federal funds from California for not meeting English proficiency standards for truckers.
